In the evolving landscape of manufacturing, supervisors don’t have time to dig through static spreadsheets or wait for someone from the training team to email the latest status report. They need real-time visibility, seamless tools, and the ability to take action on the spot.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce our latest feature, our new and improved Interactive Skill Matrix—a completely reimagined experience that transforms how teams manage and act on workforce training data.
From Reactive to Real-Time: A Supervisor’s Perspective
Before: Supervisors were often stuck waiting. Status updates came through Excel sheets that were updated weekly—if not less frequently. It meant chasing down progress, second-guessing accuracy, and feeling disconnected from what was happening on the floor.
Now: With the new Interactive Skill Matrix, everything is live and actionable. While Covalent’s training workflows keep track of Employee training milestones, the training status across each employee and training across the shop floor are reflected on the Skill Matrix in real time. One click reveals exactly where an employee stands. Assignments happen on the spot. And anyone can bookmark a personalized view for daily use.
“This is a game-changer. Before, I’d wait for the training team to send out updated sheets. Now I just pull up the matrix and everything I need is there. It’s live, it’s interactive—and I can take action immediately.”

Designed with Supervisors in Mind
Our Interactive Skill Matrix was crafted to meet the needs of supervisors and production leaders who need a tool that aligns with their fast-paced environment. They don’t have time to wade through complex data—they need something that’s customizable, easy to use, and instantly actionable. Here’s how we’ve built this experience with them in mind:
Readability and Clarity
We designed the matrix to be easy to read and understand at a glance. With visual indicators, diagonal headers, and clean layouts, supervisors can quickly grasp their team’s status without the need for extensive navigation.
Customizability and Filterability
Supervisors can tailor the matrix to focus on what matters most to them. They can filter by department, shift, or training status to see exactly the data they need. This means no more sifting through irrelevant information—just the insights that matter.
They can also customize column attributes they want to view to get glanceable context about their employees.
Point-and-Click Training Assignments
We introduced a point-and-click interface for training assignments. Supervisors can hover over a cell and click to assign training instantly. It’s as simple as pointing and clicking—no need for multiple screens or complex forms.
Drilldowns and Quick Record Viewing
Curious about an employee’s progress? Our drill-down capability allows supervisors to navigate from a high-level view to detailed insights effortlessly. When Viewing Skill Groups, supervisors can drill down into individual objectives within a group before accessing specific records. This multi-layer drill-down feature ensures that they can see the bigger picture and then zoom in on specific details as needed.
When supervisors click on a colored cell, they not only access detailed training records but also get a quick glance at crucial high-level information. For example, they can see the active date for records in progress or the expiry date for inactive records. These quick-view cards provide supervisors with the key information they need without the need for extensive clicking or searching.
Freezable Columns for Easy Comparison
To make comparing progress across different skills or objectives effortless, supervisors can freeze one or more columns on the left side of the matrix. This feature allows them to keep key columns in view while scrolling through the rest of the data, making side-by-side comparisons straightforward. Whether they’re evaluating coverage in one skill versus another or comparing individual progress across multiple training objectives, the ability to freeze columns ensures they can analyze data efficiently and effectively.
Shareable and Bookmarkable
The matrix is not only interactive but also shareable and bookmarkable. Whatever filter applied and column customized will automatically update the webpage URL, allowing Supervisors to easily copy and share filtered views with other training leaders or bookmark their preferred configurations to their browser for quick access later.
Offline Download Capability
Need to work offline or share reports? Supervisors can download the data they need for offline analysis or reporting, ensuring they always have the information they need at their fingertips.
Strategic Benefits Beyond the UI
The Interactive Skill Matrix isn’t just about better design—it enables faster decisions, clearer insights, and more aligned teams. Supervisors can now:
Reduce delays from back-and-forth coordination with training teams with the ability to see a live single source of truth view of their workforce training, and the ability to share scoped views quickly by simply copying and pasting the webpage link
Easily identify training gaps and assign specific individuals to trainings to fill those gaps instantly
Improve line productivity through informed proactive training decisions with the ability to drill down to explore various levels of detail across training on the shop floor
Why Now?
As the manufacturing world becomes more agile, labor planning needs to catch up. Teams are adopting leaner processes, rotating workers across stations, and scaling up faster than ever. In this environment, having live insight into workforce capability isn’t a luxury—it’s mission-critical.
The Interactive Skill Matrix is built to meet this moment, giving every supervisor the tools they need to manage a modern, high-performance workforce.

Three Areas For Investment To Improve Quality Outcomes
While the importance of quality management in manufacturing is rarely lost on plant leaders, investments in bolstering quality processes can sometimes be viewed as diametrically opposed to meeting production goals. However, despite the costs, studies have shown that installing some best practices in quality management consistently pays off in overall productivity. In this post we will discuss three specific areas of quality where plant leaders can realize a significant return on investment.
